MoCo Gov't Reduces Mass Attendance

 Yesterday, the government of Montgomery County Maryland decided that due to COVID (aka the Wuhan Virus) that all indoor religious activity must be reduced to 25% of capacity.  However, to my knowledge, there has been no indication that religious activities have helped to increase the spread of the Wuhan Virus.

As of this writing, I have not heard any comment from +Gregory, but I doubt he will say anything. 

Maryland pregnancy care center wins decision against ‘NARAL-driven attacks’

MONTGOMERY, MD, March 10, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Maryland-based pregnancy care center has won its lawsuit against a county law that requires it to post a notice stating it does not have doctors on staff. By now, the media has starting to come around and, in a limited fashion, begun to report the story on Kermit Gosnell.  However, one of their own on the left, has admitted that they are doing what they can to protect abortion.

Maybe we need to do the same with Carhart?

MCC and the "Rain Tax"

I don't know why the Maryland Catholic Conference (MCC) is crying about the Stormwater Fee aka "rain tax."

A short time ago, the MCC sent out an email to all Catholics asking them to write to their legislators opposing this tax.  They stated that many non-profits, such as Catholic Church, would be hit hard by this tax and basically have to reduce the number of services they provide to the community.

Now, I normally would support this effort and would have helped to advertise this.  However, this time I did not.

Why?

In 2007 there was a proposal in Maryland to increase the "progressive" tax.  The MCC stated that this was a good thing, as we need to take care of the poor and those who are less fortunate.   This also included the environment.

I argued that by increasing taxes in this manner, it would (1) decrease the amount that I have to give to charities; (2) change the debate that the state should be the key provider of support and not individuals; and (3) if you give into them on this, then there will be no stopping the state (or other government entity) from increasing taxes. 

Fast forward six years and since the "rain tax" already hits homeowners, who to you think they have decided to hit next?  Businesses and non-profits, like the Catholic Church.

I have argued, to no avail, a long time ago that when the Church does this, it will come back to bite them big time.  It took seven years, but it has.

The Archdiocese of Washington will have to make some tough decisions but the toughest will be:  "What do we cut and how much more can we ask of our parishioners, who are paying higher and higher taxes?"

(And as an aside, I wonder how many Catholic priests, religious and those who work for the Archdiocese voted for Democrat Party members.  I guess you got what you asked for, didn't you.)

Personally, I say cut the Spanish Center and redirect those funds to our Catholic Schools.  Reduce the amount spend on Catholic Charities and redirect those funds to our Catholic Schools.  Increase the amount on the Newman Center in GW (that will drive the homosexuals really crazy).

Catholic Schools get parents involved and makes them part of the larger parish.

More Anti-Cathlic Bigotry in MoCo?

Opponents say they have not exhausted their options for fighting a proposal to build a Catholic hospital on the grounds of Montgomery College in Germantown, despite approval of the plan last week by the state Board of Public Works.

The three-member board voted Wednesday to allow Montgomery College to lease land to Holy Cross Hospital for a new 93-bed, $202-million hospital. Holy Cross, which already has a location in Silver Spring, could break ground this fall and finish the project by 2014.

“It would be the first hospital built in more than 30 years in Montgomery County and would not provide the full range of services to patients,” said Beth Corbin, field director for Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

She said her group, which testified at the Wednesday public works meeting, will continue its opposition and is “weighing its options,” but declined to say whether it will initiate legal action to block the project.

Former Teacher Arrested for 3rd Degree Sexual Assault (update)

I received an email last night from a reader.

Mr. Michel Rosenzweig was arrested by the Montgomery Country Police Department and charged with five counts of third degree sexual assault from an incident in 2003.

Mr. Rosenzweig was a part-time phys. ed. teacher at St. John the Evangelist School (Silver Spring) from 1989 to 1992. Therefore, his arrest is not related to his employment with the Archdiocese.

However, this linked video states that he was accused in 1990 of inappropriately touching several female students, which would have been the time he was employed by the Archdiocese. But, according to the video, police could not charge him because "there was not any probable cause."

Update: It seems that SNAP has weighed in on this matter. If you go to their website, you can see how they have left out facts, such as the fact that the was also a teacher in other private schools and public ones, and worked for other organizations. Personally, I don't trust SNAP but that is just me.

However, I will fault the Archdiocese for not having ANYTHING on their website (as of this writing) about this issue. You thought that they would have learned.

Suit Challenges Regulations Hitting Crisis Pregnancy Centers

Attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund filed suit this Wednesday against Maryland's Montgomery County on behalf of the Centro Tepeyac Women's Center. The suit concerns a new regulation that would force some crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) to post signs telling women that the CPC does not have a licensed medical professional on staff and that the Montgomery County Health Officer encourages women to consult with such an individual.

“There is no abortion exception to the First Amendment,” said Mark Rienzi, lead counsel for Centro Tepeyac Women’s Center and a law professor at Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law.

He continued: “The government cannot create special speech rules just because people want to talk about pregnancy choices. And it certainly cannot target pro-life speakers for special sign requirements and fines while leaving speech by abortion clinics entirely unregulated."

Now, the article makes no mention if the Archdiocese of Washington is in any way involved. When I checked the diocese website, there was nothing there. So, it may be that they are helping to fund this lawsuit, they may not.

Man wanted in robbery of Convent in Silver Spring...

Montgomery County police are seeking the public's help in identifying a man believed to be responsible for several church-related burglaries in Silver Spring and are urging residents and other churches to secure their windows and doors.

Grace Episcopal Day School, Grace Episcopal Church, Calvary Lutheran Church and St. John the Evangelist Convent, home to the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, were burglarized between Dec. 19 and Dec. 28. Cash, checks and wrapped candies, to be given as Christmas gifts, were taken, police said.

A nun at St. John the Evangelist said the full extent of the theft hasn't been determined because many of the 12 nuns who live there haven't returned from holiday visits with their families. The burglar entered the convent through a second-story window, she said, and stole credit cards and petty cash. The burglar left other valuables, such as a gold cross on a dresser in one bedroom.

"For somebody to even think that they would get much from the convent -- I mean, we don't have that much around," said the nun, who declined to be identified because of safety concerns.

Police said they are searching for a man of unknown race with a light complexion and wearing a black jacket, gray hooded sweat shirt and black skullcap. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 301-565-5835.
