George Washington University in the News Again...

Pro-life activists protested outside the clinic of a Washington, D.C., abortionist who admitted during an undercover interview that he “would not help” any infant that survives an attempted abortion procedure.
 
Melissa Ohden, a survivor of an attempted abortion, spoke at the May 1 protest, saying she was thankful that the doctors at the abortion facility where she was born “didn’t subscribe to Dr. (Cesare) Santangelo’s credo that children like me should be left to die.”

“They didn’t see me as a liability, they didn’t hate me for surviving, they saw my humanity,” Ohden said.

Lila Rose, president of the undercover reporting organization Live Action, called Santangelo’s comments “a great injustice.”

Congratulations Fr. Greg...

WASHINGTON — Father Greg Shaffer, the Catholic chaplain at George Washington University, learned early that a good pastor can defy the odds and lead the young to embrace a priestly vocation.

Growing up in Bethesda, Md., Father Shaffer was inspired by the example of Msgr. Thomas Wells, a charismatic figure in the archdiocese who possessed a deep and infectious love for the Eucharist.

Msgr. Wells brought many young men to the priesthood before he was murdered during a 2000 robbery at his Maryland parish; he was 56 years old.

Now, 13 years later, that beloved pastor remains a source of inspiration for Father Shaffer, who has revealed a knack for fostering vocations at a secular university better known for jump-starting careers in government.

Since the priest’s arrival four years ago, Sunday Mass attendance at the campus Newman Center has increased from 100 to about 400 people — and, this year, four men will enter the seminary

PS:  And having read a number of articles, it seems that the two homosexual students (or maybe it is the Hatchett) don't quite have their story correct, such as the fact that the Newman Catholic Student Assn. (affiliated with GWU) is different that the one run by Fr. Greg.  Fr. Greg and the building are paid for by the Archdiocese and receives no money from GWU. 

The Real Haters are Attacking Fr. Greg Schaeffer and the Newman Center

The seniors, Damian Legacy and Blake Bergen, have announced a coordinated campaign to rid the campus of the Roman Catholic priest, reports The GW Hatchet, the school’s independent student newspaper.
  
They also assert that 12 or more students have quit the Newman Center in recent years because they can’t tolerate Father Greg Shaffer’s ardent anti-gay— and, for the record, anti-abortion — beliefs.

Shaffer has worked for five years at George Washington’s Newman Center. He told the Hatchet that religion and unrestricted speech “play a vital role at a diverse university like GW.”

Legacy and Bergen say they are primarily upset about the counseling Shaffer offers. They say he urges students who have homosexual feelings to lead a life of celibacy.

Odd, he worked at the Center for 5 years.  Didn't he know where he was working?  And the homosexual community talks about how open and loving they are.  How tolerant?  

They are some of the bigot people I know.

An Interesting Blog

Whenever you watch one of the "food" channels, you come across the story of someone who is on a quest to visit every Starbucks or McDonald's. When I was a child, I remember watching a story of a newspaper reporter who would visit a different church every other week and write about it in his city.

Well combine the two and you sort of have the next blog I have decided to add to my Blog Roll: Capitol Catholic.

According to the website:

My name is Michael. I'm a freshman at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. I'm embarking on a project to attend mass at every Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. I'm using this blog to share my thoughts and observations on this project with others. Any proceeds from this blog will benefit Catholic Charities DC.

It is interesting and I plan on visiting on a regular basis. Who knows, we may even see a story in the Catholic Standard about him. (I know I won't see one about this blog in it, until hell freezes over.)

Some Odds and Ends

I did not get a chance to give you my weekly update of the Catholic Standard. This past weekend was beautiful and I decided to enjoy the outdoors. So, I have been a little remiss on my postings.

There are many good stories in the Catholic Standard but I guess there was not enough space for any mention of how the Archbishop honored John Sweeney. You know, the former head of the AFL-CIO who has spent millions upon millions of dollars electing pro-abortion, pro-gay politicians.

However, there are a number of things which we need to update.

First, Bob Stewart is no longer heading up VOTF at Holy Trinity. That honor goes to Jim Listori. Oh, and did you miss the monthly meeting on Sept. 16th. I know I did.

If you missed the VOTF meeting at Holy Trinity in September, no need to worry. You can catch the dissenters at St. Rose of Lima on October 1st.

Our friends over at Restore DC Catholocism have a new blog. The link on the side has been updated. I look forward to the postings.

Fr. Greg, who was stationed at St. Andrew's in Silver Spring, is now the Chaplain at the George Washington University Newman Center. I enjoy his blog postings and have updated the link to his new blog site. Keep up the good work.

Finally, I have added Domine, da mihi hanc aquam! to our blog roll. Fr. Phillip Neri Powell, O.P. has an excellent blog. In fact, I highlighted his story about his experience with the Occult before he became a priest.

Vandalism at Pro-Life Demonstration at Geo. Washington University

From the Washington Post (2/3/09):

Crosses used in an antiabortion demonstration at George Washington University were defaced last week, and the school's College Democrats organization has apologized for the vandalism.

The crosses had been stored in a locked office shared by College Republicans and College Democrats. The Democrats issued a statement saying one of their members had admitted responsibility and had been expelled from the group but did not name the alleged offender.

GWU's chapter of the Young America's Foundation, a conservative group, had planted 1,100 small white crosses on university grounds on the anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

Student Republicans later found drawings and writing in black ink on some of the crosses. One depicted a stick figure of a crucified Jesus. Another, hung upside down, had a condom stretched over it. One had the name of a College Democrats leader.

This story was first seen on Newsbusters.org, which also has a link to Pat Dollard's site showing photos of what was done.

I guess the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama's call for respect did not get very far down Pennsylvania Avenue. But, what else is new with the radical left.

But more important, notice how little play this has gotten. If it was the reverse, there would be calls for sensitivity training, expulsion, restitution.
