Catholic Standard Update for April 18, 2019

I am sorry that I am very late with the update, but I did not get a hold of a copy until it was Easter and then one thing led to another...   You know the story, but never fear, we have the latest update for you.

• As expected, we have a number of stories about the new Archbishop of Washington, including his visits with St. Anthony School, Catholic Charities, our seminarians, and last but not least, the Little Sisters of the Poor.
• We have a story about the new Archbishop, who pledges to "offer hope, rebuild trust."  However, how can you do that, when you are part of the overall problem. 
• We have a brief article on the fire at Notre Dame.
• The Annual Report from the Child Protection Advisory Board has been included.  Interesting to note that Msgr. English on it, as he was in charge of Priest Personnel, a number of years ago. 
• We have a couple of stories about those who will entering into Communion with Rome.
• The rehabilitation of Cardinal Wuerl continues with a story about his sermon during the Chrism Mass and his officiating at Palm Sunday Mass.  I find the summary of his Chrism Mass sermon is ironic and hypocritical, considering that he is a major part of the problem.  Note that the Standard failed to mention his little "I forgot about McCarrick" issue, his continuing to pull the strings in the Diocese and in Rome, among others
• We have a summary of the Maryland General Assembly actions, including some nice words for Speaker Mike Busch.  Now, Speaker Busch was given a Catholic funeral, even though he was a strident supporter of abortion and gay marriage.  
• A story on the new organ at St. Peters (on Capitol Hill) and another on the new parish center at St. Al's in Leonardtown.
• A story on Georgetown and the issue of student fee for reparations.  My question is: Since Georgetown does not fall under the direction of the Archdiocese, then why do you give them any press coverage, esp. when they do something stupid. 

Cardinal Wuerl at Notre Dame. What will he do?

Cardinal Wuerl is scheduled to celebrate Mass at Notre Dame and receive an honorary degree.  This at the same time as VP Joe Biden, the highest ranking elected Catholyc, will receive an honorary degree.


Cardinal Wuerl made an issue of Georgetown University and PP.  Will he do something to show that ND is wrong with honoring pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage Biden?


Probably not.

Catholic Stanard Roundup This Week

Well folks, this week's edition of the Catholic Standard is chock full of stories.

First, those evil Republicans are at it again. It seems that Rep. John Boehner (R-OH), Rep. Daniel Issa (R-CA) and Rep. Howard McKeon (R-CA) are trying to save the DC Opportunity Scholarships. Don't they know that the NEA and other unions are just trying to stop this waste of money and ensure that everyone suffers equally. Fr. Peter Daly must be really mad about this latest development because he tells us how terrible those Republicans are, and how good the union bosses are, every chance he gets.

Second, the DC Catholic Conference is supporting the DC Defense of Marriage Act (HR 2608) which states: "That in the District of Columbia, for all legal purposes, 'marriage' means the union of one man and one woman." Can you believe that this was sponsored by Rep. Dan Boren (R-OK), Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and 30 others.

And you know what the best part was, there was no mention in the Standard that all of the Catholic members of the DC Council voted to recognize same-sex marriages. All are Democrats. Fr. Daly must really be really spitting mad at those Republicans for supporting Catholic beliefs.

Third, the Standard finally got around to printing almost a full page story on how the Bishops have reacted to the Notre Dame scandal. Of course, Fr. Reese supported the visite (what else is new). The Standard was a day late and a dollar short on this one.

We have a number of stories on various graduating classes.

We have a great story about Amanda Herndon, a former special education teacher at Our Lady of Mercy (Potomac MD), who founded the Girls Night Out club, so that young women with special needs can socialize in a relaxed setting with other girls her age. What a great pro-life story. And, Ms. Herndon probably did not even think of it in those terms.

As usual, Trinity College really knows how to insult our faith by allowing Maggie Williams (Class of 77) to not only give the commencement address but also an honorary doctor of laws. Who is she? Well, she was the former chief of staff to Hillary Clinton. Please don't tell me she is not pro-abortion.

Congratulations to Wesley Mann, a senior at St. Anselm's Abbey School, who was named the District's Poetry Out Loud champion. Word!

The centerfold is dedicated to those who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Congratulations! Live your life by your Roman Catholic faith.

A new Church is being built in Solomons. Wonderful.

But, there are dark clouds ahead for all of us.

Reps. James Sensenbrenner (R-WIS) and Chris Smith (R-NJ) has urged the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama to forgo the rescinding of the conscience clause, which gives federal protection to the conscience rights of health care employees.

I wonder how many of those health care employees, esp. Catholic ones, voted for the Most Merciful. Well, you wanted change. Now you got it. It is possible you may loose your job because of your beliefs. Nice. Reminds me of a Mao's China and Hitler's Germany.

Finally, over 120 priests have convened to discuss the "best effort" to support Catholic education. This article probably would not have been written except for this blog, the posting of the Policy in 2009 paper and the efforts of a number of concerned Catholics (who got hell from their fellow Catholics).

The writing is on the wall folks.

I will discuss more on this later.

But, as Mr. Thomas Burnford (Sec. for Education) said: "the goal is to finalize the policies this summer so some of them can begin to implemented in the schools, this fall."

Open Letter to the Catholic Standard

I received my copy of the Catholic Standard last week and was taken back a bit by the full page story on the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama.

Although this was picked up from the Catholic News Service, I sat there as I read it and shook my head. First, that you would publish a story, which focused on his speech, that could have been easily been found in the Washington Post and the NY Times. If I wanted a pro-Obama slant, I would go there.

But where was the story about the 70 plus bishops (not 50) who spoke out against it? Where was the story about Fr. Father Norman Weslin, the 80 year old priest who was arrested and then tagged? How about the story on Norma McCorvey (aka Roe of Roe v Wade) who is now Roman Catholic and was arrested? These are the things that Fr. Jenkin's has brought on. Where are those stories?

But, to add insult to injury, the story uses the language of the pro-abortionists against us. You may not agree with the tactics of Randall Terry but the author of the uses the term "anti-abortion" not "pro-life" to describe him, and others who protested this terrible episode. Did you guys not read thru the story?

After the story which paints the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama in a favorable light, you then post the Life Issues Forum asking everyone to speak up against the embryonic stem cell research guidelines, which have been proposed by the Obama administration.

The only thing that seemed to be critical of this honor bestowed upon the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama was the lukewarm reminder by our Archbishop that Catholic universities must be one in the faith, the previous week. Although some in the Catholic blog world, praised it, those of us who live here know that this may be how he feels, but nothing will be done to bring into line Catholic universities like Trinity and Georgetown. Heck, if the Archbishop cannot stop Voice of the Faithful from meeting at St. Rose of Lima and Holy Trinity, why should we expect him to do anything about Catholic universities.

I thought you guys had made a turn for the better. I hope that this is a momentary lapse.

Our friends over at Les Femmes, have an even more chilling story:

Dear Friends, I just spoke by phone with a friend, Sonny Torres, who went to Notre Dame this weekend with his wife Karen to protest the university giving Obama an honorary degree and a platform for promoting his policies which include murdering unborn children. Neither of my friends had any intention of getting arrested, but the Lord apparently had other plans.

After six hours of joining in the protests off campus, Karen and Sonny left to begin their long ride back to Virginia. But they got turned around and pulled into the parking lot of a credit union bordering the university campus to get their bearings. As they did, they noticed a group of police cars gathering and officers putting up barricades which appeared to mark the route of the Obama motorcade. So Karen and Sonny got out and Karen pulled out her sign, a half posterboard sheet, that read, "Shame on Notre Dame!"

Bishops and Catholic Universities

The Bishop D'Arcy of Ft. Wayne-South Bend, IN has written a very thoughtful and clear letter regarding the visit of the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama to Notre Dame.

A couple of excerpts:

1. The meaning of the sentence in the USCCB document relative to Catholic institutions is clear. It places the responsibility on those institutions, and indeed, on the Catholic community itself. “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” — “Catholics in Political Life,” USCCB.

2. When there is a doubt concerning the meaning of a document of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, where does one find the authentic interpretation? A fundamental, canonical and theological principal states that it is found in the local bishop, who is the teacher and lawgiver in his diocese. — Canon 330, 375 §§ 1 & 2; 380; 381 § 1; 391 § 1; 392, & 394 §1.

3. I informed Father Jenkins that if there was any genuine questions or doubt about the meaning of the relevant sentence in the conference’s document, any competent canonist with knowledge of the tradition and love for Christ’s church had the responsibility to inform Father Jenkins of the fundamental principle that the diocesan bishop alone bears the responsibility to provide an authoritative interpretation.

I consider it now settled — that the USCCB document, “Catholics in Public Life,” does indeed apply in this matter. The failure to consult the local bishop who, whatever his unworthiness, is the teacher and lawgiver in the diocese, is a serious mistake. Proper consultation could have prevented an action, which has caused such painful division between Notre Dame and many bishops — and a large number of the faithful.

Now, does Archbishop Wuerl consider himself to be the teacher and lawgiver of the archdiocese? I have heard many times from priests that he is a teacher. Yet, Georgetown University, Holy Trinity Church and other Catholic institutions in this diocese continue to ignore "Catholics in Public Life."

Archbishop Wuerl, do you or do you not agree with this?

If you agree with this, then why do you remain silent as Georgetown and others continue to give scandal to the Church?

An Open Letter to Archbishop Wuerl

Dear Archbishop Wuerl:

Over 30 of your brother Bishops have spoken out against the abomination of Notre Dame's invitation to President Obama. Some have been very polite and others have come out and laid it on the line. No matter how they have said it, you have not thrown your biretta in the ring (so to speak). Over 300,000 other Catholics have spoken out against this.

Are you worried that by speaking out you will loose any chance of saving the DC Opportunity Scholarships?

Are you worried that the Archdiocese will not obtain any Federal funding for any of our social programs?

Are you hoping that by being silent, the social justice crowd will join you in support of Catholic schools and scholarships?

Are you hoping that by being silent you will help to change immigration policy?

Are you hoping that by being silent, the lifting of the conscience clause on Catholic medical providers will stay in place?

Are you hoping that by remaining silent, you will contiue to receive large Forward in Faith donations?

Let me put to rest those fears to rest once and for all.

President Obama and the Democratic Party couldn't care less what you do or do not think, as long as you allow him to continue to co-op your priests, religious and lay people to get what he wants. And you are doing just what he wants.

Oh, and forget the social justice crowd. There has not been a peep out of them on the DC Opportunity Scholarships, abortion, etc. They are just a bunch of noise makers.

Your brother bishop in NYC has made his voice clear on this matter.

It is your turn.

You are the local bishop in the Nation's Capital. Stand Up. Raise your voice.

Help Stop Obama at Notre Dame, sign the petition.

One of the Postings that Started it All...

One of the first responses to the invitation of the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama, was an open letter to Fr. Jenkins written by a lawyer and graduate of ND.
He also has a follow-up to it.

If you have not done so, I encourage you to sign the petition adding your name to the over 100,000 others like myself who are disgusted.

Now, that His Excellency John M. D’Arcy, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend has declined the invitation to attend the commencement, now it is time for all members of the Catholic clergy to call upon Fr. Jenkins do what is right and ask the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama not to come.
