This week, he took on the issue of why Catholic priests were not preaching and speaking out on the issue of homosexuality. He writes:
Dear Parishioners,
In recent years, homosexuality has been frequently in the news. An increasingly nationwide effort to give recognition to so-called gay “marriage,” is only the latest matter to receive a lot of attention. Prior to this, the Episcopalian denomination ordained as a bishop a man who openly practices homosexual behavior. This action has divided the Episcopalian denomination in two. Prior to this, the last fifteen years have also seen the Episcopalian and other Protestant denominations liturgically celebrate gay “marriages” and unions. This too has caused great divisions in those denominations. Even among the Catholic faithful, mistaken notions about homosexuality and marriage have taken hold.

Janine Carreiro is an impressive Catholic lay woman who serves as director of Brockton Interfaith Community, which brings together area pastors to respond to pressing needs in the city of Brockton, MA. After serving as a lay missioner in East Timor, Janine joined the Brockton Interfaith Community in 2008. She has played a key role in helping people of faith seek public policies that benefit those most affected by the economic crisis. With her leadership, Brockton faith communities have helped secure loans for unemployed homeowners, an improved loan modification process for troubled homeowners, and commitments to address foreclosure. Janine has also led successful efforts to hire street outreach workers and improved access to jobs for past offenders. Motivated by her strong Catholic faith, Janine’s work is a clear and inspiring example of a young laywoman acting on the Church’s preferential option for the poor.
