Catholic Standard Review (January 24, 2019)

Well, once again, I do a quick review to let you know what you can look forward to in this week's issue of the Catholic Standard.

• Three are still no photos, and as far as I can tell, no mention of Cardinal Wuerl.  Let's see how long that will last.
  
• We see a couple of stories on the March for Life.
• According to the page 5 story, the Annual Appeal exceeded 99% of the goal.  Now, what is most interesting, is that 34,000 donors provided $14million in funds. More about this in another blog posting.
• The Maryland Catholic Conference will be pushing for the regular stuff.  However, I note that they are not publicly advocating for illegal aliens, as in the past.  Could it be because of the blow back in previous years?
• Catholic Schools Week.  I am always supporting of Catholic Schools Week.  However, in the list of noted Catholic School graduates, they list Muriel Bowser, the Democrat party (not Democratic) Mayor of DC.  It should be noted that she is a big pro-abortion and gay rights supporter.  Epic Fail on that one, Catholic Standard.  
• Article on USCCB Education Secretary.  Didn't know we had one.
• Congrats to the St. Mary's (Landover Hills) for winning the Maryland Cyber Robotics Coding Competition.
• World Youth Day has a couple of articles and a cover photo. 
• Obit on Rev. Charles Currie by Catholic News Service.  When you quote Rep. Nancy Pelosi, you know that this is one of those priests that have led the church down the wrong path. 

A Catholic priest who once earned the ire of former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will retain his post as chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives after members of Congress, with Democrats now holding a majority of seats, voted January 3 to keep Fr. Patrick J. Conroy SJ as chaplain for the next two years as the 116th session began.


In an undated YouTube video interview that appeared in 2015, Conroy declared that Catholic doctrine regarding homosexuality is a "dead end." Suggesting that Catholic teaching is antiquated, he said, “Now, we have theology on all this stuff and the answer is ‘gays can never engage in this and can never be married.’" He said, "But that’s a theology that goes back centuries before there was any understanding of human psychology, human individuality, human sexuality and all those kinds of understandings of the human psychosis, and the human person that weren’t as complete prior to these kinds of advances in understanding.”

With catholyc theologian Nancy Pelosi at the helm, what else do you expect?  I don't think that Hyattsville will do anything about it, they are hoping to sweep Cardinal Wuerl's lie under the rug.

A Weekend Funny in Honor of Nancy Pelosi

I cannot take credit for this, but this is in honor of Nancy Pelosi, that preeminent catholyc theologian and elected official.  This is also in honor of all of her catholyc supporters, esp. in the Archdiocese of Washington.

PELOSIUM

 A major research institution has just announced the discovery of the densest element yet known to science. The new element has been named Pelosium. The chemical symbol of Pelosium is Pu. 

Pelosium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311. These particles are held together by dark particles called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Pelosium’s mass actually increases over time, as morons randomly interact with various elements in the atmosphere and become assistant deputy neutrons within the Pelosium molecule, leading to the formation of isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientist to believe that Pelosium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity in concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as Critical Morass.

When catalyzed with money, Pelosium activates MSNBCobnoxium and CNNadnausium, both elements that radiate orders of magnitude more energy, albeit as incoherent noise, since they have half as many peons but twice as many morons as Pelosium. Since it has no electrons, Pelosium is inert. However, it can be detected chemically as it impedes every reaction it comes in contact with. According to the discoverers, a minute amount of Pelosium causes one reaction to take over four days to complete when it would have normally occurred in less than a second. 

In the presence of anti-morons, Pelosium can be extremely corrosive. Botox seems to distort and smooth it's surface, without impeding it's ongoing decay. Pelosium has a normal half-life of approximately two years, at which time it does not decay, but instead undergoes a transmutation, appearing in a new location but displaying the same properties. In this process, assistant neutrons, vice neutrons and assistant vice neutrons exchange places. Some studies have shown that the atomic mass actually increases after each transmutation. 

Research at other laboratories indicates that Pelosium occurs naturally in the atmosphere. It tends to concentrate at certain points such as government agencies, large corporations, universities, and anywhere there is news coverage occurring. It can usually be found in the newest, best appointed, and best maintained buildings. 

Scientists point out that Pelosium is known to be toxic at any level of concentration and can easily destroy any productive reaction where it is allowed to accumulate. Attempts are being made to determine how Pelosium can be controlled to prevent irreversible damage, but results to date are not promising.

If there was ever a case to deny Communion...

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D.-Calif.) vowed today that she will join with the Obama administration in standing up against the Catholic Church in defending a new regulation that will require Catholic individuals to buy, and Catholic institutions to provide, health insurance plans that cover sterilizations and artificial contraceptives, including those that induce abortions.

Pelosi: We can't afford to defend DOMA

Yes, once again, we bring you another enlightened view from none other than Nancy Pelosi, that great Catholyc theologian.

It seems that Rep. Pelosi is suddenly worried about the cost of defending DOMA, although she did not seem worried about how much her airline and booze costs were when she was Speaker of the House.

Pelosi Declares "War" on Pro-Life Movement

(NOTE: This is my opinion and take on the article referenced below. I do not speak for Mr. Peters or CatholicVote.Org.)

Tom Peters, over at CatholicVote.Org, has reported that Nancy Pelosi (a Catholyc) has called for the pro-abortion forces to take no quarter, on the recent pro-life bills introduced in the US Congress. Now, this is not simply a matter of a simple disagrement on the new translation of the Missal, this is "all out war" (as I believe it is).

There can be no mis-understanding her about her efforts.

Archbishop Wuerl, once again, it is time for you and the bishops to stand-up and fight.

We will be there with you, but as our Cardinal, you can NO LONGER REMAIN SILENT.

FOCA Postcards at your local Parish...

This past weekend, during the announcements, the Celebrant asked each person to complete a set of postal cards dealing with the possible passing of FOCA. There was a card for each US Senator and the US Representative for my parish.

The card states:

At this time of serious national challenges, Americans should unite to serve the good of all, born and unborn. The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), the most radical and divisive pro-abortion bill ever introduced into Congress, would create a "fundamental right" to abortion that government could not limit but would have to support. FOCA would overturn many existing widely supported policies, including laws protecting parental involvement and conscience rights and those preventing partial-birth abortion and taxpayer funding of abortion.

Please oppose FOCA or any similar measure, and retain laws against federal funding and promotion of abortion. As your constituent, I would appreciate a written response telling me how you would vote on these matters.

I have nothing wrong with this, and it shows democracy in action. However, in many respects, this is a waste of time and money.

Why?

First, history shows that this is meaningless to Sen. Barbara Mikulski and the Democratic Party as a whole.

About 10 or so years ago, over 250,000 postal cards were delivered to Mikulski and then Sen. Sarbanes about rejection of abortion. There was the photo op of the the Cardinals of Washington and Baltimore and the Bishop or Wilmington with all of the cards on the steps of the capital.

Mikulski and Sarbanes never mentioned it. It was totally ignored.

Second, Sen. Mikulski (who always makes certain to state how she was raised a Catholic) and Cardin are both 100% pro-abortion. The representative for my parish is 100% pro-abortion too. Makes no bones about it.

Third, they know that even with a 100% pro-abortion voting record, it does not matter -- they will be re-elected since Catholics don't vote their faith. Heck, you have members of the Knights supporting pro-abortion politicans and you have the USCCB hiring staffers who support pro-abortion politicans.

Finally, they know, with the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama, Sen. Nancy "the theologian" Pelosi, Harry "the Body" Reid and with complete Democrat control of both Houses, they can and will ignore pro-lifers.

So, I will fill out the cards and send them it. It is a bit of a futile effort but who knows, maybe God will change one of their hearts.

Personally, I believe that the only way you are going to change the laws, is by electing pro-life politicians but when members of our own hierarchy vote for the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama, you are really fighting as the underdog.

Archbishop Wuerl Weasels Out

As many of you know, Cardinal Egan (Archdiocese of NY) has publicly admonished Rudy Guliani for receiving communion during the Pope's visit. This has of course put some of the members of our hierarchy in a bit of an embarrassing situation, like our own Archbishop Wuerl.

During the Pope's visit to Washington DC, US Senators Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd and John Kerry all received Communion at National Stadium. (There are photos circulating the web of Dodd and Kerry receiving Communion. I have not seen one of Sen. Pelosi, so if you know of one, please let me know.)

According to an article in the NYTimes:

The Archdiocese of Washington also issued a statement on Monday. It said that Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl had consistently and persistently presented the Church's clear teaching on the evil of abortion and the need for those in public office to recognize that the support of abortion is wrong.

How to respond to those in public office who support abortion legislation is open to various legitimate pastoral approaches, as the United States bishops affirmed in their June 2004 statement on Catholics in political life, the statement said. The decision concerning the refusal of holy communion to an individual can best be made by the bishop in the person's home diocese with whom he or she presumably is in conversation.

I am just dumbfounded by this statement. This is unbelievable. This just boggles the mind.

What Archbishop Wuerl has just said was that: "You can only be denied Holy Communion by the bishop where you reside, since they know you best."

No matter what you have said on the issue, no matter how you have voted on the issue, no matter how many fundraisers and how much money you have donated to supporting abortion, unless your bishop takes action, no other bishop can do anything about it.

This is the same argument made by those who say: "You can't talk about abortion, if you are not a woman." or "You can't talk about supporting the War in Iraq, if you have not served in the military."

What the Archbishop has just done, and will be picked up by pro-abortion politicians and others all around the world, is to reduce the authority of the church to speak on these issues and have Catholics listen, just another notch.

Can you see the conversation now:

Archbishop Wuerl: Abortion is evil. As a Catholic, you should not support additional funding for it.

Pro-Abortion Politician: Well, that is all well and good but since you are not the bishop of my diocese, it does not matter what you say. I only have to listen to the views of Bishop X in this matter. Since he has not said anything on it, I am free to support increased spending on abortion.

What a disaster this is.

No wonder why many Catholics in this Diocese have lost total confidence in the Archbishop's leadership.

He has not only failed us, but the entire Church!

NB: There are those of you who may think that using the term "weasels out" is too derogatory. I am using it since it was a term both he and I would recognize immediately, since it was used when both of us were kids. If you do not like it, then I suggest you may substitute other titles, such as "Archbishop Wuerl Cops-Out" "Archbishop Wuerl Pulls a Pontius Pilate" "Archbishop Wuerl Has No Backbone."

Trinity College - Giving to their Endowment (NOT)

Yesterday, I received a letter from Trinity College asking for a donation for their Endowment Fund. In the past, I had given due to personal appeal from a good friend who worked there. At that time, they reminded everyone that they were a "Catholic" instiutition. However, when he left, I decided to stop giving and I am glad I did.

Over the last few years, the word "Catholic" and the following of the teachings of the Church seem to have been forgotten.

We all know about Nancy Pelosi's visit to Trinity. In fact, we probably know more about it because of what the Archbishop did not do, than what they did.

We also know that Trinity has Gay Pride Club. Now, that is okay for a secular college or university but to have one at a college that claims to be Catholic. Nope, not at all.

So, when I received it, I looked at it, and immediately tossed it in the trash.

If you get one, you should trash it too.

Archbishop Wuerl's Interview with The Washington Times (Part 2)

On the issue of pro-abortion politicians, the Archbishop continues his insistence that we must:

“explain to people why what they are doing is so bad, why voting for legislation that allows terrible things to happen is itself a bad thing. We have to help them understand that."

And that is correct, but if you say it to a Mario Cuomo, Nancy Pelosi or a Ted Kennedy, year after year after year, and they don’t change their position, then at some point you need to say “enough is enough.”

They need to be denied the Holy Eucharist (which you did not mention), denied any opportunity to publicize themselves in a Catholic institution (which you refused to take a stand on regarding Nancy Pelosi and Trinity College) and then, and only then, should we excommunicate them. That is the last resort.

Archbishop Burke of St. Louis has outlined the case for denying Communion to pro-abortion Catholics very well and yet, you refuse to do so. Why? What are you afraid of?

Maybe this is why you did not mention it as an option during your interview.

Archbishop Wuerl, many of us who sit in the pews each and every week, are tired of the same old “song and dance” routine (and I really don’t know how to say it otherwise).

You need to take action. Inaction is not an option.

By continuing to ignore the issue, you continue to weaken the Church as an instrument of moral teaching.

Two Responses to Nancy Pelosi

Speaker of the House Nany Pelosi (D-CA) was invited to attend Mass at Trinity College in Washington DC in Janary 2008. There was very little coverage of it (if I remember correctly) in The Catholic Standard and little to be heard from by Archibishop Wuerl.

Shortly after the event, Archbishop Wuerl was intereviewed by a reporter from the California Catholic Daily, while attending a Community and Liberation conference. When asked about this, he repeated his statement that this was a matter for the university, he would not make any statement nor ask priests or deacons to refuse her communition. You can read it here for yourself.

Now, I direct you to one Fr. John Malloy, former pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul in San Francisco and his "Open Letter to Nancy Pelosi." (Since I do not have permission to publish it, I can only direct you to it.)
