I am back...sort of...

Well, I am getting ready to jump back into the swing of things. I will be blogging in the next few days a little more about the Sept. 12 Protest in DC against the Regime of the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama. I plan to be there. Will you?

More on it later but in case you are interested, here is a website for you to learn more about it: http://912dc.org/

Changes at SOAR

Nope, I have not fallen off the face of the Earth (although some may wish it). I have just been taking some time off, as well as, keeping very busy a few days a week at work.

My friend, who wrote to Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR), about recognition of Cokie and Steve Roberts has not heard back from SOAR. However, he tells me that there seems to be some changes at SOAR.

Msgr. Enzler, was the Chair of the Board before August 9, 2009 is no longer the Chair.

I wonder if that is due to shining the light on this fact by this blog and a couple of others?

I don't know if there are other changes due to this, but I still hope that the Archbishop does not attend the dinner, and gets them to change.

Only time will tell.

However, if you get the chance, write to them and let them know your displeasure about it.

Catholic Standard - Weekly Update

Well folks, it is that time of the week...for the Catholic Standard (Archdiocese of Washington DC) Weekly Update.

The cover story is on the death of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, founder of Special Olympics, and noted pro-life advocate. Talk about pro-life -- Special Olympics. She also fought, usually behind the scenes, to advocate the pro-life agenda in the Democratic Party. Let us keep the repose of her soul in our prayers.

We then move to an article on Sotomayor's appointment to the Court. Once again, the Catholic News Service (CNS) says that it is "unclear on abortion stand." Give me a break! Did you notice how quiet NARAL, Planned Parenthood, NOW and the rest of the pro-abortionists were? The reporter (Patricia Zapor) and the editors are just asleep at the wheel or just tools of the the Most Merciful, Lord High Barack Obama.

This is followed by an article on the new US Ambassador to the Vatican -- Miguel Diaz.

In the Insight section, we see an article on how the Catholic Health Assn, and others are pushing for socialized medicine. There has been enough articles on following the money for CHA, St. Vincent dePaul an Catholic Charities to really make you wonders -- is it really about health care, or have they been bought off by Federal contracts. Remember, CHA is a trade association. But of course, the CNS article glosses over these facts.

If the government takes over health care, will there be a need for the Church to raise funds to pay for health care for those who cannot afford it? I wonder if the Church as thought about that.

There is a nice article on fostering the missionary spirit in children. And, I would go further -- encouraging children to help those who are less fortunate. And that encouragement should come not by supporting a government program, but by doing it from what you have.

There is a full page on the Knights of Columbus' Annual Meeting. They are big supporters of Special Olympics. They offered support of true marriage, against porn and are pro-life. Maybe the pro-Obama Knights should think twice about being members.

Did you notice that there is no mention of the honoring of pro-abortion Cokie and Steve Roberts by the Support Our Aging Religious (SOAR) organization. The story posted here was picked up by one of the local bloggers and one of the major Catholic blogs. A reader has shared with me his/her letter to them asking them to pull back their award, but no news yet. Will keep you posted.

The obituary section has a very nice story on Crosier Father Roert Zylla.

Finally, the back page has a good story on Pure Fashion. It is about teaching young ladies about dressing fashionably but appropriately. It also has a self-esteem component too. The young ladies who are shown in the article all look very beautiful in their outfits. Nice job.

Remember, as always, if you don't get the Standard, pick one up in your parish. Remember, they are required to carry it (and pay for it) -- whether they like it or not.

++++++++++

Remider: I am taking time off, so you won't see as many articles posted during August. Any breaking news or something that needs some light shined on it (like SOAR), you will see it here.

SOAR to Award Pro-Abortion "Catholics"

Some of the greatest unsung heros of the Catholic Church are our the nuns who taught in Catholic Schools. They worked very hard, for many years.

According to a small story on Page 16 of the Catholic Standard, SOAR (Support Our Aging Religious) will award the 2009 Elizabeth Ann Seton Award to Cokie and Steve Roberts.

Both are strong pro-abortion supporters and have criticized the Church on various teachings. This is from LifeSite News:

Saint Michael's College (Vermont): Journalist Cokie Roberts (commencement speaker & honorary degree), Vermont Governor Jim Douglas (honorary degree), May 17Cokie Roberts, political commentator for ABC News and National Public Radio, has publicly attacked Pope Benedict XVI as "really lacking in the theological virtue of charity," "an extremely controversial choice" and "the most conservative voice of Catholicism." In her syndicated column with husband Steve Roberts, she has espoused abortion rights and ridiculed pro-lifers as "extremists." The Robertses characterized the federal ban on partial-birth abortion as "off the track" and "cynical games-playing" by pro-life activists. They have argued that the authority of the Catholic bishops has been significantly weakened, in part because of their teaching on homosexuality and contraception: "It's as if they are asking to be ignored."

This is, in my opinion, a disgrace to honor those who look to kill the unborn, while attempting to raise funds the our elderly sisters.

Either SOAR does not know about the Roberts' criticism of the Holy Father and their support of abortion, or they did not do their homework.

Once again, this shows that you can be a well known person, who goes against the teachings of the Church, and be honored.

The Chair of SOAR is Msgr. John J. Enzler of the Archdiocese of Washington DC.

For Shame on SOAR.

For Shame on Msgr. Enzler.

For shame on Archbishop Wuerl for allowing this to happen in the Archdiocese.

PS: You can write to them at info@soar-usa.org

Catholic News Service -- Misrepresntation Again!

I don't really know what the USCCB is doing with the Catholic News Service. We have a lot of shoddy journalism over there and when the facts are pointed out, nothing seems to be done.

Today, we have another story entitled: First Latina confirmed to serve on Supreme Court.

Judge Sonia Sotomayor will become the first Hispanic on the Supreme Court, after the Senate confirmed her appointment Aug. 6 by a 68-31 vote. Sotomayor, 55, will be the sixth Catholic on the nine-member court, the most ever at one time. She was scheduled to be sworn in Aug. 8. A New York native and daughter of Puerto Ricans who struggled to be sure their two children were well-educated, Sotomayor is President Barack Obama's first Supreme Court nominee. She will take the place of Justice David Souter, who retired at the end of the term in June. Shortly after the vote, Obama said he was "filled with pride and great confidence" in Sotomayor and that her confirmation made not only a great day for the judge and her family, but "a great day for America." He said the addition to the court of a justice with Sotomayor's temperament, intellect and history will help assure that the saying "equal justice under the law" is "not just a phrase over the door of the courtroom, but what happens inside" the court as well.

Is she really a Catholic or is she just a Catholic in name only?

Do you really think that she is not pro-abortion? If he was pro-life, NARAL, Planned Parenthood, etc. would have been all over her like white on rice.

Please, let's begin to clean house over at CNS.

What Do Catholics Believe - New Link

Periodically, I like to add links to blogs or websites that I think are good. What Do Catholics Believe is one of those. The author is Fr. Kevin Cusick.

According to his profile:

Father Kevin M. Cusick writes from the Washington, D.C., area for The Wanderer, the oldest US Catholic weekly published in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He also authors "Meeting Christ in the Liturgy," weekly reflections for the Scriptures of the sacred Liturgy and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, an on-line resource for over ten years with over one half million visitors and is a long-standing contributor to Homilies.net. Cusick is a Lieutenant Commander in the US Navy chaplain corps (RC) who served most recently in Iraq, before that for two years in Italy and three years on board the carrier USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER as well as other locations in the US. He is also published in The Catholic Standard of the Archdiocese of Washington and the magazine Homiletic and Pastoral Review. His photographs have also appeared in The Wanderer. A Detroit native, Cusick attended Fordham University, from which he earned the Bachelor of Arts in English and Mount Saint Mary’s for an M.A. in sacred theology.

Enjoy. It is good stuff.

Parishes Benefit from Electronic Giving

This week's Catholic Standard (Archdiocese of Washington DC) carries a story from the Catholic News Service on electronic giving (or eGiving): Even in a recession, parishes said to benefit from electronic giving (July 30th, Page 13).

One of the basic thrusts of the story is that people use e-Giving as a method to be better stewards of their treasure. In return, parishes see an increase in the amount of giving.

Personally, I don't believe that -- that is the part of being better stewards of their treasure.

Each family should make a determination of how much they should give for the year. That can be spread out over 52 weeks or 12 months. Once that is determined, then stick with it.

Good stewardship means that even if you are not at Sunday Mass at your parish, you should still give your weekly amount -- even if you double up the following week. Even when I am out of town, my parish still gets a weekly offering for the week that I am not there. I usually drop it in the next time I am at Mass. If at the end of the year, I find out that I have not contributed the full amount, then that amount will get dropped in the collection basket. The parish I am visiting, also gets a donation.

However, eGiving does mean that parishes do make more. Why? Because whether you attend or do not attend, the parish will still continue to collect the amount for the week or month.

Parishioners who use this method, sign up for a year, with a certain amount being taken out of their checking or savings account on a monthly or weekly basis. You can change at any time, but let's be honest, how many of us are going to change it. In fact, we don't even notice the money is gone from our accounts...just like any a payroll deduction. The only time we remember is when the yearly anniversary comes up and then we can either increase, decrease or keep the same.

For parishes, it is a bit less bookkeeping too, since there are fewer envelopes to open, and checks/cash to count and deposit. So, there is a savings on their part too.

So, yes, parishes do benefit but I am not convinced that it shows better stewardship of our treasure.

++++++++++++++++

On a side note, I will be taking time off this month, so you will probably see fewer stories. However, if there is something that catches my attention, I will certainly write about it. If you have any items of interested, regarding school closings, charter schools, etc., please feel free to drop me a line. I may not get back to you immediately but I will.

Have a good August.
