Mt. Calvary Catholic Elementary School (Forestville, MD) to Close

I have been meaning to post this since Sunday, but have not had the chance.

On April 18th the Archdiocese announced to the parents and and students, that after 67 years, the school will close.   All Catholic school officials and pastors, in the Archdiocese, were notified of this the next day.

At this time, there seems to have been very little communicated about this by the Archdiocese.   There is no reference to it on the school or parish website.

I suspect that the announcement was made at this time, so as not to give parents a chance to save the school from closing, and the Archdiocese a public relations headache.

I feel quite sad and sorry for those in the parish, the Bishop McNamara High School community, and esp. for those children who are currently enrolled.  I feel sad for the state of Catholic education in this Archdiocese.

For those who are interested, here is a great post about the history and memories of the school

(Note:  I do have documents to prove this and will post it if necessary, for those who might not believe.)

This is indeed very sad. Mount Calvary was a regional school. It was the regional school for St.Luke,Our Lady Queen of Peace,Our Lady of Perpetual Help, The Church of the Incarnation, St. Teresa of Avila, Church of the Holy Spirit and St. Bernardine. At least in this instance, the Cardinal's plan for regional schools failed miserably. By the way, what is the regional school for Nativity? Or for that matter, what is the regional school for St. Francis Desales? Just asking.
