Archdiocese Spends $$ on Wuerl Promotion

The Archdiocese of Washington (and by extension Pope Francis) does not get it.  From today's LifeSiteNews:

The Archdiocese of Washington purchased advertising on CNN’s website to promote Pope Francis’s complimentary regard for outgoing Cardinal Archbishop Donald Wuerl - paid for through its communications office, which gets financial support from Catholics in the pews.

The ad is flagged by CNN at the top with the message, “Paid Content,” and a disclaimer appears beneath the archdiocese’s own headline, resembling a sub-headline, stating, “Sponsored by the Catholic Standard.” The Standard is the newspaper for the Archdiocese of Washington.

This is why I have stated over the years, and I have put my money where my mouth is: Do Not Give to the Cardinal's Appeal!

I might add to contribute to your parishes via only those collections that are exempt from diocesan assessments.

The Archdiocese of Washington also takes 16% from your parish’s general collection each Sunday. So it is better to target your donation to specific purposes which are not taxed by the chancery. Note that the monthly maintenance second collection (if your parish has one) is taxed at a lower rate by the Archdiocese - at 8%.
