A Non-Political Event my...
In the August 29th edition, Mark Zimmerman wrote a piece entitled: Catholics need to help make 'the dream' a reality, panelists say.
What bothers me about the article is that Mr. Zimmerman sees this is a non-partisan event.
So, who "sponsored" this non-partisan event: Catholic Democrats, Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Pax Christi, USA.
As you can see, all of these organizations are non-partisan in nature and the event was non-partisan, as it included a number of conservative Catholic groups. The conservative Catholic groups were.... Oh, yes, there were no conservative Catholic groups.
And, who was one of the main panelists? Tom Perez, pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage Secretary of Labor AND a member of Holy Redeemer parish. Supporter of Obamacare.
And who else spoke, well there was Ralph McCloud, the director of the USCCB Catholic Campaign for Human Development. You remember Mr. McCloud, the treasurer for a pro-abortion Democrat in Texas. You remember Mr. McCloud, the person who supposedly has verified that all those receiving money from CCHD are not in violation of Catholic teaching. Yeah, right.
So, Mr. Zimmerman and the good folks over in Hyattsville...this event was just as bad as the actual anniversary of the March on Washington, in which it became a love fest for the Democrat Party.
How did a pro-abortionist/pro-homosexual marriage member of this administration get to speak at a Catholic venue? Who approved of it? Did anyone in Hyattsville know about this?
Is this what we support with our weekly donations? No wonder why Obama and the Democrat Party are not scared of us, they know that we will invite them to our institutions, hire them to work for us and in general, allow ourselves to have our own Fifth Column.

Catholic Standard Promotes Pro-Abortion Labor Secretary
So tell me, did Mr. Zimmerman forget to mention that while she was representing CA 32:
- She voted YES on expanding research to more embryonic stem cell lines
- Voted YES on allowing human embryonic stem cell research
- Voted NO on restricting interstate transport of minors to get abortions
- Voted NO on making it a crime to harm a fetus during another crime
- Voted NO on banning partial-birth abortion except to save mother’s life
- Voted NO on forbidding human cloning for reproduction & medical research
- Voted NO on banning Family Planning funding in US aid abroad
- Voted NO on federal crime to harm fetus while committing other crimes
- Voed to expand contraceptive services for low-income women
She received a 100% rating from NARAL and a 0% rating from National Right to Life. She was on the recommended list of Emily's List -- the list that only support pro-abortion female candidates.
I guess that is all in the past.
Once again, the Catholic Standard has let the faithful in this Archdiocese down.

Big Changes Are Coming to the Catholic Standard on Sept. 15th
In my estimate, when you look at what is happening to the Catholic press over the last few years, these are due mainly to financial conditions but also the speed in which we are able to communicate and share information.
In addition, this will give the Archdiocese more time to plan and implement a coordinated communications effort on something, such as illegal immigration.
So, what are the changes?
1. Publication every two weeks.
2. A more glossy/publication with (and insert trumpets blaring here) "striking covers, bigger and more dramatic photos, bolder headlines and insightful graphics."
3. More in line w/ the Spanish paper.
4. More articles from Catholic News Service, Catholic News Agency and I bet, more "Specials to the Standard."
Only time will tell if these changes will save the paper or if it will go down to a once a month publication.

Catholic Standard Weekly Upate
Well folks, this week's Standard takes a number of stories from the Catholic News Service, such as he appointment of Archbishop Chaput to Philly, the DREAM (or NIGHTMARE) Act, and Harry Potter.
In the center of the paper, we have a couple of updated stories on Catholic places to visit this summer such as the Franciscan Monistery and St. Mary's. As well as the regular story about the Encounter the Gospel of Life summer camp.
Remember, if you don't get it, at least you can view most of it on-line.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
I have already talked about the effort by the Archdiocese and their support of illegal immigration.
We have an article on the 60th Anniversary of the ordination of His Holiness, Pope Benedict (Ad Multos Annos!!) and how the Vatican is moving more and more into the world of social media.
We have news on the abortion and gay marriage front. We have two articles on the church in China, as well as, the Church in Romania.
Although I rarely agree with Fr. Daly, he has some interesting thoughts about some of his relatives, as he reflects on 25 years as a priest. We also have some reflection by Ricahrd Szczepanowski on his nephew, who was just commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the USMC. Thank God we have such young men and women.
Finally, as always, we have some wonderful photos of Vietnamese Catholics who honor Mary. The young women all look so beatiful in their traditional dress.
Remember, vote for the Repeal of the MD Dream Act. It is really a nightmare for you and me.

Justice for US Citizenship takes a step forward in MD!
The Maryland State Board of Elections validated over 63,000 signatures to place the Repeal of the Maryland Dream Act before the CITIZENS of Maryland. There are another 40,000 to be verified.
All I can say is WOW and THANK YOU!!
This week's Catholic Standard has a full page article, written by the Communications Office, on the Maryland Catholic Conference's Immigration Task Force to fight this repeal. (Thanks Melvin for getting this to me, so that I don't have to get it at Church this weekend.)
Now you can tell it is important to the Archdiocese, because it is on Page 3 -- and that is where you want important stories to be when you open a tabloid -- and written by the Communications Office because it is a "Special to the Standard".
So, let's take a look at the Standard story a bit more in depth...
- There is little mention that these students are illegal aliens (the legal term).
- They do not mention that will cost the taxpayers of Maryland $12,000 per student per year. With a possible cost to the taxpayers of over $60 million per year.
- They state that these students will not take slots away from residents but they will take away slots from other citizens! What the MCC ITF is saying is that who cares if it takes away from other US citizens, as long as it does not take away from Maryland citizens.
- The MCC states that they do not condone people breaking the law, but they they go right back to the argument that we should embrace the law breakers and give them this benefit.
- According to Msgr. Brennan of St. Martin of Tours in Gaithersburg we must allow these students to attend at a discount. Baloney. We don't have to and should not.
- The article states that they will getting on the phones and into parishes. Let's see if we will get sermons on this from the MCC, parish inserts, etc. Let's keep a watchful eye on this one.
It is time we tell the Maryland Catholic Conference (MCC) and the Archdiocese that there are more important things to focus on -- like tax breaks for Catholic school parents and stopping gay marriage.
Stop wasting your time on this nonsense and support JUSTICE for US CITIZENSHIP.

Catholic Standard Highlights Pro-Abort/Pro-Gay Politicians
First, is the Cardinal with Mayor Gray re the signing of an agreement making Washington DC and Rome "sister cities." Of course, the article mentions how the Mayor is Catholyc.
Second, we have another article having to do with an award ceremony (can't remember the name) but they prominently mention that Donna Brazile is a Catholyc. Now I am not certain what that has to do with the awards dinner, but as you know she is heavily involved in the Democrat Party and a HUGE supporter of abortion and homosexual marriage. Remember how Archbishop Hughes boycotted Xavier University bestowing her an honor?
Once again, the Standard highlights the fact that the Cardinal does the photo 0p with someone who goes against Catholic teaching, as well as, honors by mentioning a Catholic who stands against many of the Church's teachings.
With friends like the Catholic Standard, who needs enemies.
Seems like the Communications group over at the Archdiocese is starting to slip up.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
This week, the Standard once again covered Catholic Schools week, with a number of stories on some of the events at the schools around the Archdiocese.
We also saw coverage of the Cardinal's new book: "The Mass: The Glory, The Mystery, The Tradition." I was hoping to get a copy of it to review but I guess it got lost in the mail.
We also have continuing coverage from the March for Life.
We also see a section highlighting those priests and religious for celebrating anniversary's ranging from 25 years to 60 years. Congratulations and thank you.
However, I did note an interesting editorial this week entitled: Threats to religious freedom, close to home. It focuses on the various attacks on Catholic institutions over the last year or so: Holy Cross Hospital attempting to expand, the attack on pro-life pregnancy centers and the DC City Council legalizing same-sex marriages.
This is good and a step in the right direction. However, the ending of the editorial was weak. It does not ask the faithful to do anything more than "not to forget the importance of religious freedom."
No suggestions for action. Nothing about Catholic politicians who flaunt Catholic teaching. Nothing.
Someone told me once that the newspaper of an Archdiocese or Diocese reflects the personality and direction of the bishop. How true this is with the Catholic Standard.

Catholic Standard Update
Most of last week's edition focused on the recipient's of the new Manifesting the Kingdom Award. These are people who have given extraordinary service to their parish or to select other organizations. Of those who have received the award, I know of two personally and they are deserving of this award. Some others, I know of because of their work such as B. Francis Saul on the Archdiocesan Finance Council (wrote about him in a previous blog).
Many of the profiles highlighted such individuals as Mr.Kurleigh Bayrd, a young man with a illness but serves Mass with faith and devotion almost every week. There is Ms. Maris Moriarty, who works as a volunteer in the Office of Priest Vocations. And a husband and wife team, the Thompson's, who volunteer at their parish. The Catholic Standard highlights many others deserving of this award.
This is one time I can say that if you haven't picked up a copy, do so and read their stories.
More tomorrow...

Need a Job? The Archdiocese has one for you...
One of my issues I have had is that the marketing of Catholic education is really non-existant. For years, I have complained that our Catholic cemeteries had more marketing than our Catholic schools. You can hear regular ads on WMAL (630AM) usually with Msgr. Enzler or someone who has loved one's buried at a Catholic cemetery.
Now, there is nothing wrong with this type of advertisement but there was nothing for Catholic schools except the feeble attempt to pay for a couple of ads on Metro buses earlier this year.
Although they will not admit it, marketing has been left up the to local schools. Local schools do the best they can, relying on parents who may have some marketing experience to assist.
Why?
As I see it, it is because these are parish schools and therefore, the responsibility rests with them, even though the Archdiocese tells them what to teach, how much to pay teachers, etc.
Well, after years of being left on their own, a large number of Catholic schools closing and enrollment dropping like Obama's approval ratings, combined with the new education policies, the Archdiocese has finally announced a new position:

St. Joseph Regional School in Beltsville
If you look at this week's Catholic Standard (Nov. 11, 2010 Page 7), the article touts the new St. Joseph Regional School in Beltsville, as a reflection of faith and the shared effort of three parishes.
How wonderful and exciting it is that this school, now has an enrollment of 210, has seen an increase of 40 students compared with the year before. How beautiful it is that there are three parishes sharing the burden - St. Joseph, St. Hugh and St. Nicholas.
But things are not as they seem to be.
You see, what the Catholic Standard did not tell you was
- St. Joseph originally had an enrollment of 170.
- St. Hugh originally had an enrollment of 125.
- Combined, they should have an enrollment of almost 300.
- Now, they only have 210 -- a loss of 90 students.
I guess that is what they mean by new math. A 90 student loss is actually a gain.
I wonder if they contacted the parents of the 90 to determine why they did not come back. Could it be the distance? Could it be that people want local Catholic parish schools?
BTW, this article was "Special to the Standard." In other words, it was created by the Communications Office of the Archdiocese of Washington.
PS: Thank you to one of my readers' for your email on this matter.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
The cover story is the Annual Red Mass and as I had predicted, there was no mention of Vice President Joe Biden, the highest elected Catholyc official in the United States, receiving Communion. Nope, not a mention. Why would we insist that the Archbishop do something like not providing Communion to a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual marriage politician. (At least they only made mention and did not have a photo of him.)
We have an inside cover story on the veneration of the Don Bosco relic at the National Shrine.
The Archbishop's New Evangelization program was once again highlighted in his visit to St. Elizabeth's School. In addition, we also see this program being highlighted to the John Carroll Society. I guess that the New Evangelization program does not include calling pro-abortion politicians on the carpet.
One of the most interesting changes, and one that I doubt most people will notice, are the changes to the Catholic Charities program. For example, the Spanish Catholic Center will move from Langly Park to the McCarrick Center near Wheaton (actually, it is closer to Glenmont). There are a host of other changes. It makes me wonder if the changes are part of a cost saving measure over the next few years...less leased/rented space.
There is a story of the installation of the first layperon to be President of St. John's College and that of St. Mary's Riken sister school program.
Finally, I will end this Update with one of the saddest stories in a while: That of the death of Navy Seal, Lt. Brendon Looney, who died in Afghanistan. He is a graduate of DeMatha and his sisters are either graduates or current students at the Academy of the Holy Cross. He is buried in Arlington next to that of his best buddy -- Marine 1st Lt. Manion.
Eternal rest grant unto him , O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Let us also remember his wife, parents and sisters. May God help them through this time of suffering.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
Similiar to last week, this week's Standard has the overall theme of the Archbishop's letter on the New Evangelization. Now, I was way too busy to report on it and just skimmed over it last week.
In my review of this, I noticed that there was no mention of what is to be done when there are dissident movements or priests within a parish or the diocese or , when the bishop or church groups honor those who go against our faith. There seems to be a silence that as Catholics we need to speak out about these.
To that end, we have a new religion curriculum, something which I reported on a while back. The program "clearly states what participants in parish and Catholic elementary school religious education programs should be able to know, understand and do at each grade level." (Catholic Standard, Page 3). The program has six key elements: knowledge of faith, liturgy and sacraments; morality; prayer; education for living in Christian community (maybe it should be Catholic community) and evangelization and apostolic life.
We also have a story, which is linked to the New Evangelization, about Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian parishioners "taking it to the street." In other words, knocking on doors and invited folks to join them. We also see the Archbishop discussing it at the Labor Day Mass. And he visits GWU. And he shows off the New Evangelization poster to employees. He is all over the place.
Congratulations to St. John the Baptist Elementary School. They are a Blue Ribbon Award winner!!!
We have two articles on bullying both physical and cyber.
We also have Msgr. Holley's visit to Ghana (former Gold Coast) and Nigeria.
We do not have any information about how the bishops voted on CCHD, nor do we have any stories about the layoffs at St. Mark's School. Maybe there will be something next week. Maybe not.
Remember to pick up a copy of it at your parish, since they are required to accept a number of copies each week. And, drop a couple of coins in the basket to help pay for it.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
Yes, folks, it is that time again (trumpets blare, drums roll): The Catholic Standard Weekly Update.
The cover focuses on one of the new regional schools: St. Francis International School. This story also continues on Page 5 and 6.
We have some clergy appointments. This now seems to be a regular feature in the Standard appearing on Page 2 (inside cover).
There are some stories on the 5th Anniversary of Katrina.
Since it is Labor Day weekend, we have a couple of stories on the economy and labor.
We do have a Reflection by a retired worker on Labor Day by Bob Stewart. Mr. Stewart also wrote a piece last year. However, just like last year, the Catholic Standard left out of his biography that he was the head of Voice of the Faithful (VOTF) at Holy Trinity -- a dissident group. Of course, no one ever mentions the corruption of union leadership in their labor day messages, or how unions are big supporters of gay marriages, abortion, etc., or the violence they committed in support of Obama's Health Care Disaster. But, let's not let these little things stand in the way of a good opinion piece.
We have a good story on Lech Walesa by George Weigel.
The Standard has the center insert dealing with the Maryland Catholic Conference survey of candidates for Maryland Governor, Assembly and US Congress.
I would have thought that Fr. Daly's Parish Diary would reflect on Labor Day. Nope. He decided to step right into the NYC Mosque and as always, gets in way over his head on this and really misses the point.
- Did you see any mention of his support for the Orthodox Church which stood across the street from the WTC, which is cannot be rebuilt? Nope.
- Did you see any mention of the fact that the person who is pushing for the "mosque" wants to establish Sharia law in the US? I did not.
- Did you see any mention that there are apx. 100 mosques in NYC currently? Nope.
- Did you see any information that this person who wishes to establish the Mosque has changed his story a couple of times or that he is a slum lord. Nope.
I wonder if Fr. Daly was opposed to Disney's America?
We have an article about the County Council candidate forum sponsored by the Justice and Advocacy Council of MoCo of the Archdiocese of Washington. Our colleague over at Restore DC Catholicism was there and reported on it. There was no question and answer period, there was no mention of abortion, the strong arm tactics against pro-life centers, the opposition to tax credits for Catholic school parents, no discussion of gay marriage, etc.
Tell me, does not Social Justice apply to the unborn? Does not Social Justice call for tax relief to those parents who save MoCo millions of dollars each year who send their children to Catholic Schools? Does not Social Justice apply to pro-life centers. Yet not one word was asked of these candidates at the forum. FOR SHAME!
And you wonder why many of us do not trust the "social justice" crowd.
Finally, I found a very interesting article by Carole Norris Greene. She is on to something here that many of us see, but we really don't see. Take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
- Looks like Archbishop Wuerl will issue a pastoral letter on the new evangelization, entitled: "Disciples of the Lord: Sharing the Vision."
- There are a series of articles on Mother Teresa. Nice.
- A full page on the installation of new pastors.
- Congrats to those educators who are celebrating 25 years of more in Catholic Schools. THANK YOU and GOD BLESS.
- The Maryland Catholic Conference on issues faced by Maryland voters makes no mention of illegal aliens as an issue. Wonder why?
- Louis Brown of the Maryland Catholic Conference stated that the economy continues to stabilize. Who is he kidding?
- Some photos of the rebuilding of St. John School in Hollywood, as well as, some of the school openings in Calvert and St. Mary's Counties.
- We have an advertisement on page 12 by Georgetown University. Yes, that same hotbed of dissent. Why would you accept their copy?
Well, that's all for now.

Catholic Standard Story Update
However, there was no mention was made in the original story that the illegal alien was being assisted by the Hogar Immigrant Services, an arm of Catholic Charities in Arlington County.
You can read the rest of the story in the Richmond Times Dispatch dated Aug. 12th.

Catholic Standard Weekly Update
The Page 3 story discusses how Catholic leaders decry what has happened to Prop 8. Unfortunately, as long as Catholics continue to vote for pro-gay politicians, who put into place activist judges, we will see this happening more and more. Also, as long as some of our parishes (and pastors) do not see a problem with this lifestyle, we are only fighting the good fight.
The Maryland Catholic Conference Director has received a pledge that the new health care plan for MD won't fund abortions. D Mary Ellen Russell is quoted as saying: " We're very pleased with the statement from MHP." All I can say is: "Does the name Neville Chamberlain ring a bell?" Such assurances are not worth the paper they are written on.
At the same time, there is an Insight piece by Richard Doerflinger on the abortion in the Health Care Reform. Pro-Lifers won the most recent round but the pro-abortion folks will find a way.
There are two nice photos of Costa Ricans honoring Our Lady of the Angels.
Well, there is a story on the Benedictine nun killed and two seriously injured by an illegal alien. The story, from Catholic News Service, states that this could have been prevented if he had not been drinking and driving. Of course, if he had been deported immediately none of this would have happened...but that really isn't the issue.
It is always wonderful to see when a Catholic church is restored to the original look, as with the story on the restoration of the wall murals at Holy Comforter-St. Cyprian parish. Many churches had beautiful gold leaf designs, frescoes, etc., only to be painted over in the 1970's.
CNS describes what Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is doing for the Pakistanis, who are struggling with terrible flooding. There is also information on how you can donate.
The center of the paper focuses on the Knights of Columbus' 128th Annual Supreme Convention in DC. No mention of how they refuse to throw out pro-abortion and pro-gay politicians. Don't get me wrong...the Knights do excellent work and support the Church but this is an embarrassment.
Well, pregnancy centers are once again under attack in Maryland -- this time in Baltimore. They are also under attack in California. And it seems that MoCo's centers are fighting back. Again, when you elect pro-abortion, pro-gay politicians...and you cozy up to them on certain issues, this is what you get.
Finally, I wanted to focus on the MoCo Council-at-Large Forum planned on Aug. 25th by the Justice and Advisory Council of the Archdiocese at St. Jane de Chantal parish. I know that they will focus on jobs, low income housing, free health care, looking the other way on illegal aliens, but I wonder if they will also ask questions on pregnancy centers, gay marriage, etc. Don't know if I will get over there, but if you do, please let me know what happens.
As always, pick up a copy of the Catholic Standard at your parish and drop a couple of extra coins in the basket. Parishes are required to purchase a number of copies...whether they like it or not.
